Area Information |
Germantown,
in the NW section of Philadelphia, is just a 7 mile distance
(15 minutes by car) from the Center
City Historic District and Convention
Center. But Germantown is a historic place
in its own right, founded in 1684, just 2 years after William
Penn settled Philadelphia in 1682. Called "History's
Backyard", the area was settled by Quakers, Mennonites,
and many other immigrants searching for religious freedoms.
A beautiful area of hilly farmland fed by many streams,
it is the site of large summer homes for many of the 18th
century's most affluent and important colonialists. In the
19th century, it was the center of Abolitionist activity,
with the Underground Railroad a significant activity at
the present site of Burbridge Street. A part of the Tulpehocken
Station Historic District, Burbridge Street became the focus
of new homes for the captains of industry at the turn of
the 20th century (1906).
Today you can visit the site and watch
the annual re-enactment of the Battle of Germantown at "Cliveden",
a National Trust Historic House, a few minutes' walk from
the B&B. There are over a dozen other important Colonial
sites you can tour, like George Washington's "Summer
White House", used during the 1790's when Philadelphia
was the Nation's Capitol. Within walking distance of the
B&B are biking and walking trails in the Wissahickon
Creek Park, that stretch continuously for 14+
miles through lovely parkland in the NW. Quaint and unique
shops, and wonderful restaurants are within a 10 minute
ride in the NW's Mount Airy and Chestnut
Hill adjacent neighborhoods. Come enjoy some
of the best of Philly's 40 neighborhoods in our "History's
Backyard" -- just a short ride from the Historic District
tourist attractions of Center City. Good public transportation
to all the historic sites is just a 10 minutes walk from
the B&B, so you can leave your car at home. |
